But, hot liquids can cause pediatric scald burns, with instant soups accounting for 1 in 5 pediatric scald burns every year. Seattle Children’s Hospital says, “Young children have thinner skin than older kids and adults, so they burn easier. Children ages 4 and under are at the most risk for scald burns because they like to explore and do not know what can hurt them.”

So far, the 2019-2020 flu season has been especially harmful to young children. As of January 30, 2020, there have been 54 reported pediatric deaths due to the flu virus in the United States. Nationwide, the CDC estimates that there have been 6.4 million cases of the flu, 55,000 hospitalizations, and 2,900 deaths. Staying healthy is a top priority for parents and children, and one of the best ways to avoid catching the flu is through regular hand washing.

During our recent travels to Kansas and California, an alarming theme emerged among family childcare providers. While inquiring about how to secure a childcare facility, many family child care providers stated that licensure regulations prevented them from locking their doors during operating hours. This presented a huge red flag for us, as unlocked doors can lead to deadly consequences.
